Of Stamps and Stencils

 

We Germans like to use such fabric totes for (grocery) shopping etc. instead of plastic bags. Since I live abroad it’s always amusing to be able to spot Germans at work and around Luxembourg with them, I also notice them while travelling. Thought I’d pimp one of my many totes with handmade rubberstamps and stencils! Next one will be dyed. Made for the new WS First letter first name challenge and GPP 18 crusade Cut it out. Stamps printed with StazOn Cactus Green and stencil with black spray paint. Started this stencil post already last month after cutting them out and now it fits perfectly. Below is my carved stamps drawer, on top are the first stamps I carved back in Munich – diamonds,words and muertos – and newest stamps carved last month after seeing a design on a t-shirt bought at H&M. I already have a stamp carving tutorial HERE. So I thought it was time for a simple STENCIL tutorial below. Been using paper stencils for the longest time. It’s an easy and handy tool for repeating text, pattern and shapes. Normally I use it with acrylic paint or a marker. Spray paint is new to my art and I thought I’d finally give it a go after seeing Gillian’s tutorial on art-e-zine HERE. She asked for self-portrait stencils which I did cut 2 of plus my initials in cool fonts. 🙂 But I want to keep it simple and not invest in a lot of new supplies for starters like Mylar and Hot Pen (as Gillian suggests), unless I want to really dive into this spraying art technique. Instead of Mylar you can also use acetate. My first spray experience had to be the Alter Bridge band logo I got from the Street Team page to put onto the envelopes sent out to the radio station and the club. No fancy background since I didn’t want to mess it up. There are many “How to make stencils” videos on You Tube like here and here and Google has even more. And check out the GPP site!

Wir Deutsche mögen ja Stofftaschen. Da ich im Ausland lebe schmunzle ich immer, wenn ich auf der Arbeit oder sonstwo in Luxemburg jemand damit sehe, auch auf meinen Reisen. Dachte, ich motz eine meiner vielen Stofftaschen mit selbstgeschnitzen Stempeln und Schablonen auf! Gemacht für die neue MS-Herausforderung Anfangsbuchstabe Deines Vornamens und GPP 18 Crusade Schneid es aus. Stempel hab ich mit StazOn Cactus Green und Schablone mit schwarzer Sprühfarbe aufgetragen. Hatte letzten Monat einen Eintrag zu Schablonon angefangen, nachdem ich diese hier geschnippelt hatte, ihn aber nicht fertig gekriegt. Und nun passt er ja bestens. Oben ist meine Schnitzstempelschublade, obenauf meine ersten Stempel, die ich in München geschnitzt habe – Rauten, Worte, Muertos – und meine neuesten vom letztem Monat. Geschnitzt, nachdem ich einen coolen Druck auf einem neuen T-Shirt von H&M entdeckte. Ich hab bereits HIER eine Stempelschnitzanleitung. Deshalb dachte ich, mach ich unten eine einfache Anleitung zum Selbermachen von Schablonen. Benutze schon ewig lange Schablonen. Ist ein einfaches und praktisches Utensil zum Wiederholen von Mustern, Text und Formen. Normalerweise verwende ich es mit Acrylfarbe oder einem Filzstift. Sprühfarbe ist neu in meinen Arbeiten und ich wollte mich endlich dranwagen, nachdem ich Gillian’s Anleitung bei art-e-zine HIER gesehen hab. Sie fragt nach Selbstporträtschablonen, wovon ich 2 gemacht hab und gleich auch meine Initialen in coolen Fonts. 🙂 Doch wollte ich es einfach halten und anfangs nicht in viele neue Sachen investieren, wie Mylar und Hot Pen (die Gillian vorschlägt), es sei denn, ich wollte sowas regelmäßig machen. Anstelle Mylar geht PVC-Folie oder Transparentfolie (meine Initialen hab ich daraus geschnitten). Mein erstes Sprayerlebnis sollte das Bandlogo von Alter Bridge sein, dass ich mir von der Street Team-Seite heruntergeladen hab, um es auf Umschlägen an den Radiosender und den Club zu schicken. Kein schicker Hintergrund, wer weiß, ob ich ihn nicht ruiniert hätte. Es gibt viele Videos zu “Wie mache ich Schablonen” auf You Tube, z. B. hier und hier und bei Google gibt’s noch viel mehr. Simple Stencils/Einfache Schablonen

– Printed (or drawn) image onto cardstock or acetate /Gedrucktes (oder gemaltes) Motiv auf Karton oder PVC-Folie 3mm, Transparentfolie
– X-acto knife/Schnitzmesser
– Cutting mat/Schneidunterlage
– Repositionable adhesive/Marabu Fix-it Sprühkleber

1. Crop logo and print onto cardstock. (Or draw your own pattern!) *** Bring Logo auf die richtige Größe und drucke es auf Karton aus. (Oder zeichne Dein eigenes Muster! Leg Transparentfolie auf Vorlage, zeichne Umrisse nach – achte auf Inseln – und dann schneid’s aus!)

 

2. Place cardstock onto cutting mat. Cut out text with lino cutter. Pay attention to “islands“. Those are bits that will disappear if you don’t add a “bridge” (see image)! ** Lege Karton auf Schneidunterlage. Schneide Text mit Schneidmesser aus. Achte auf “Inseln“. Dies sind die Teile, die wegfallen, wenn Du keine “Brücke” hinzufügst (s. Foto)!

3. Make a spray proof of your stencil. ** Mach ein Sprühmuster von Deiner Schablone.

4. Spray back of stencil with repositionable adhesive. Let dry. The adhesive helps to keep paint from going under the stencil. See sample where I forgot glue! ** Besprühe Rückseite der Schablone mit fix it-Spray und lass trocknen. Kleber hilft zu Verhindern, dass Farbe unter die Schablone geht. Siehe Beispiel, wo ich Kleber vergessen hatte!!

5. Place stencil onto selected surface and cover up nearby surfaces. In a well ventilated room (garden, balcony etc.) spray paint at a good distance onto stencil. ** Lege Schablone auf Unterfläche und decke Flächen rundherum ab. In belüftetem Raum (ideal Garten, Balkon) sprühe Farbe mit etwas Abstand auf.
