Frida meets Modigliani

Thought I’d join Michelle’s GPP crusadesn°33 Back to School - which I haven’t joined in ages. This girl too often needs a push! Been wanting to acquaint myself more with abstract art and art styles in general. Like going back to Art School which I never did. I quickly abandoned a journal as my canvas since I found it too small. Instead I started using a watercolor pad as my canvas on this artylicious autodidactic journey. Turning to the masters and learning from their styles and visions is interesting and also a fun painting challenge. As a red thread, I chose Frida Kahlo to be my model and muse (surprise surprise). It’s been more difficult than I thought, but that’s part of the learning curve I guess. Anyway, above is my Elongated Frida painted with chalks, a medium I normally only use for accents. Below is the original inspiration. Left the hand out on purpose.

Dachte, dass ich mal wieder bei Michelle’s GPP crusade n°33 Back to School - mitmache, was ich schon ewig nicht mehr getan habe. Dieses Mädl braucht zu oft einen Schubs. Hatte mich ja  entschlossen, abstrakte Kunst und Kunststile im allgemeinen besser kennenzulernen. So als würde ich wieder zur Kunstschule gehen, auf der ich ja nie war. Schnell hab ich ein Journal als Leinwand aufgegeben, da es einfach zu klein war. Stattdessen hab ich zu einem Aquarellblock gegriffen, der mich auf dieser autodidaktischen “artylicious” Reise begleitet. Sich den Meistern zuzuwenden und von ihren Stilen und Visionen zu lernen ist interessant und auch eine erfreuliche Malherausforderung. Als roten Faden hab ich Frida Kahlo als Model und Muse ausgewählt (Überraschung, Überraschung jaja). Es ist schwieriger als ich dachte, doch wie immer ist das Teil des Lernens, oder? Egal, oben ist nun meine Längliche Frida, gemalt mit Kreide. Ein Medium, dass ich normalerweise zum Akzentesetzen verwende. Darunter ist das inspirierende Original. Hand habe ich bewußt weggelassen.

Recognisable through his style of elongated shapes, oval faces, and swaths of color. Copied a lot, but as always, nothing better than the original.

Erkennbar durch seinen Stil von länglichen Formen, ovalen Gesichtern und flächigen Farben. Viel kopiert, doch wie immer ist nichts besser als das Original.

Mixed-Media Journal

Thought I’ll show on my blog as well and not only the ning site -  my new mixed-media art journal!! Decided to sign up for the fabulous Kelly Kilmer’s A Prompt A Day class. She’s fun and cool and I love her blog. Mucho organized classes and the perfect journal cheerleader for me! I need that. Started out with an old discarded German book cover about plants. This was the best excuse for me to use Kaffe Fassett fabrics inside and out, buttons, fibers and beads and of course a cool Goth girl from Daniel Torrente/Stampotique. FUN FUN FUN!!! Inside are signatures made of folded watercolor paper, strong enough to hold mixed-media doodads. I keep getting asked where I buy my Kaffe fabrics. Bastelkiste here in Luxembourg sells them, though most of the time I order them online from Glorious Color (best deal and smal min. sizes) and eQuilter.

Dachte ich stell’s auch auf dem Blog ein anstelle nur auf der ning-Seite -  mein neues Mixed-Media Art Journal!! Hab mich entschieden, die A Prompt A Day Klasse mit der tollen Kelly Kilmer zu machen. Sie hat Humor, ist cool und ich mag ihren Blog. Mucho organisierte Klassen und die perfekte Journal-Cheerleaderin für mich! Brauch sowas. Hab alte zerfledderte  Buchdeckel eines dt. Buches von 1947 über Pflanzen für den Bucheinband verwendet. Perfekte Ausrede, um meine Kaffe Fassett-Stoffe innen und außen einzusetzen, und natürlich Knöpfe, Bänder, Perlen und ein cooles Goth girl von Daniel Torrente/Stampotique. MACHT GUTE LAUNE!!! Innen sind gefaltete Aquarellpapierseiten, stark genug für mein Mixed-Media-Gedöns.

Oaxaca Workshop

Took me a while for this post but since Mexico is a hot topic here, better late than never! Here’s my teeny little anima sola shrine created with pretty much things only from Oaxaca. I traveled to Oaxaca with nothing but paints and paintbrushes and thought it would be easy to find a wooden box or a tin nicho, now I know better. I only found finished artwork, nothing plain and empty. Plain tin nichos are made and sold in San Miguel de Allende, why they don’t sell them elsewhere remains a mystery to me. Some workshop attendees created mucho más over the 4 day workshop, wasn’t my priority hehe. The workshop was fabulous and well organized, Michael de Meng demoes below in the video how he paints little acrylic objects. He’s a nice and funny guy, won’t ever go wrong taking his class. He just posted the skinny for  de Meng de los Muertos 2009 on his blog, run … don’t walk. You don’t want to miss it!

Hat ein gutes bissl für diesen Beitrag gedauert, aber da Mexiko auf meinem Blog ein beliebtes Thema ist, besser spät als nie! Hier ist meine winzigkleine Anima Sola Assemblage, gemacht mit so gut wie nur Zeugs aus Oaxaca.  Bin nach Oaxaca nur mit Farbe und Pinseln gereist und hatte gehofft, dort leicht eine Holzschachtel oder besser noch Tin Nicho zu finden.Nun bin ich schlauer. Fertige Kreationen gibt’s überall, doch nix Leeres, Unbearbeitetes. Tin Nichos werden in San Miguel de Allende gemacht und verkauft, warum sie nicht auch andererorts verkauft werden, ist mir ein Rätsel. Einige Workshopteilnemer waren richtig fleißig und machen mucho más während der 4 Workshoptage produziert, war nicht meine Priorität hehe. Der Workshop war klasse und bestens organisiert, Michael de Meng zeigt im Video unten, wie er kleine Plastikteile und -tiere bemalt. Er ist ein netter und lustiger Kerl, da kannst Du einfach nichts falsch machen. Er hat gerade die Info für de Meng de los Muertos 2009 auf seinem Blog eingestellt. Lauf en … und nicht gehen um sich anzumelden. Das willst Du nicht verpassen!

One the first workshop day we took a trip down to the “religious store“. Look at the goodies below we got there and I concentrated on small things since I prefer working with such. The glass eyes are so fabulous and they come in so many sizes and colors. Took me (and some others) hours to finally get back to class.

Am ersten Workshoptag sind wir alle zum “religiösen Laden” gepilgert. Schau Dir nur mal die tollen Sachen von dort an, hab mich eher auf Kleinzeug konzentriert, da ich damit lieber arbeitet. Die Glasaugen gabs in mehrern Größen und Farben, klasse. Dauerte leider viele Stunden, bis ich (und einige andere) wieder zurück in der Klasse waren.

                        

As mentioned before, Michael de Meng is a nice and funny guy. Here he even demoed “prevention of toxic fumes” (above)! haha And of course he came with some original artwork (below). Thought my matchbox shrines needed some company. Since I prefer color, I couldn’t resist these cool 3-d lotteria cards. These cards and much more will be featured in the new book he is working on, filled with Latin American style artwork, lotteria cards etc. Something certainly to look forward to.

Wie bereits erwähnt, ist, Michael de Meng ein netter und lustiger Kerl (und er spricht sogar noch ein bissl Deutsch!). Er zeigte uns live (oben), wie man sich am besten vor giftigen Dämpfen schützt (mit einer mexikanischen Wrestlermaske)! haha Und natürlich kam er mit Originalkunst (oben). Dachte, dass meine Streichholzschachteln Gesellschaft brauchten. Da ich farbig bevorzuge, konnte ich diesen niegelnagelneuen tollen 3-d-Lotteriakarten nicht widerstehen. Diese Karten und viel mehr wird in seinem neuen Buch, an dem er arbeitet, zu sehen sein. Zu sehen gibt es dort Lateinamerikanisches, Lotteriakarten etc.

First time I had heard of Boris Spider was when Michael de Meng showed us a cool shrine he had bought from him. It’s handy to speak some Spanish since a local told me that artwork I loved was made by Boris Spider. Then upon return even found a flickr site HERE.  Way cool, not to be missed! Would have loved to visit his workshop …

Das erste Mal hörte ich von Boris Spider, als Michael de Meng uns den coolen Luchadorschrein (Wrestler) von ihm zeigte, den er gekauft hatte. Schon praktisch etwas Spanisch zu sprechen, denn ein Mexikaner sagte mir, dass eine Deko, die mir super gut gefiel (Mitte links) von Boris gemacht war. Als ich zurückkam hab ich sogar eine Flickrseite HIER gefunden.  Voll cool, nicht zu verpassen! Hätte zu gerne sein Atelier besichtigt …

Mexican Pottery

I fell in like with these huge Frida pottery statues, just look at the little detail 3-d Fridas derived from her paintings. Wish I had seen these earlier and planned my suitcases differently. The shop owner was kind enough and allowed me to take pictures. Will have to look for such next time. Like both different styles equally, would have been hard to pick just one anyway. More traditional pottery at the end of the post. I just love Frida, skulls and skeletons ;)

                                  

Hab mich gleich in diese riesigen getöpferten Frida-Statuen verguckt, schau Dir mal die 3d-Figuren nach ihren Gemälden an. Hab sie leider erst am Ende entdeckt und hatte keinen Platz mehr im Gepäck. Ob sie überhaupt ins Handgepäck gepasst hätten? Doch der Ladenbesitzer ließ mich wenigstens Fotos machen. Muß das nächste Mal nach sowas Ausschau halten. Mag beide Stile, wer weiß, ob ich mich sowieso hätte entscheiden können. Eher traditionel Getöpfertes gibt’s am Ende des Beitrags. Ich mag halt Frida und Skelette

*** Pottery artist Doña Sofia Reyes ***

We were fortunate to visit pottery artist Doña Sofia Reyes, such a sweet little woman! At the age of 87, she is still creating gorgeous pottery artwork. She has been doing pottery all her life, is completely self-taught and you should see how fast and accurately she does it using the most simple tools (see video below and see how she started out from scratch here). What surprised me though was to find out that the absence of oxygen (they remove it towards the end of the firing process) makes the clay turn into a beautiful black – all natural, nothing painted!  The shiny silvery look is achieved by sanding the area prior to drying (then firing). Below are some pictures from her workshop.

Wir hatten das Glück Doña Sofia Reyes (Getöpfertes) kennenzulernen, was für eine kleine liebe Frau! Im alter von 87 stellt sie noch herrliche Tongegenstände her. Sie töpfert schon ihr ganzes Leben lang, hat es sich selbst beigebracht und Du solltest sehen, wie schnell und exakt sie mit den einfachsten Gegenständen arbeitet  (s. Video unten und hier ist der Anfang des Krugs). Was mich jedoch überraschte war zu erfahren, dass gegen Ende des Brennprozesses der Sauerstoff entfernt wird und deshalb der Ton komplett schwarz wird! Der glänzende Effekt wird vor dem Trocknen (dann Brennen) mit Schmirgelpapier erzielt. Ganz einfach, gewußt wie! Unten sind Werke aus ihrer Werkstatt.

Day of the Dead

“Oh really, you celebrate the Day of the Dead (día de los muertos) in Germany as well?” said the Mexican cab diver (in Spanish). “Well, it’s celebrated a bit differently and we call it All Saints and All Souls Day, but we honor the dead as well.” I responded back (in Spanish). *** “Ach wirklich, Ihr feiert auch den Tag der Toten in Deutschland?” sagte der mexikanische Taxifahrer (in Spanisch). “Doch, wir feiern es etwas anders und es heißt Allerheiligen und Allerseelen bei uns, doch wir ehren ebenso die Verstorbenen,” antwortete ich zurück (in Spanisch).

I had heard and read that the Mexicans party on the cemetary, but did not expect it to be such a party (especially in Xoxo, almost like Carnival, very strange)! In Mexico the Day of the Dead is the most important holiday of the year. *** Ich hatte davon gelesen, dass die Mexikaner auf den Friedhöfen feiern, doch erwartete nicht so ein Fest (besonders in Xoxo, fast wie eine Kirmes ohne Karusells, schon komisch). In Mexiko ist der Tag der Toten der wichtigste Feiertag des Jahres.

Normally it’s a 2 day celebration, beginning on the evening before November 1, the spirit of the children arrive to stay with family and friends and leave the next day. The spirits of the adults then arrive the next evening and leave on November 2nd. (Only if November 2nd falls on a Sunday, they will stay for another night and leave on November 3 only!)  To welcome them, families and friends prepare altars/ofrendas in their homes, decorated with chocolate, pan de muertos (bread of the dead), marigold, favorite food and beverages, toys etc. to make them feel welcome and remembered. Visiting family and friends bring more offerings. Such are also placed on their graves. Sugar skulls are made or bought which carry the name of the deceased.

On Sunday morning (11-2)  our tour guide Juan took us spontaneously to a small village cemetary. He wasn’t too keen on the commercialized events in front of the Xoxo cemetary. I thought it was a bit strange as well but delighted immediately at the sight of this small quiet beautiful cemetary. It was amazing to see the sea of beautiful flowers in daylight, shining so brightly.

Unser Führer Juan fuhr sonntagsmorgens (2.11.) spontan mit uns zu einem kleinen Dorffriedhof. Er war nicht so begeistert von dem kommerziellen Jahrmarkttreiben vor dem Xoxo-Friedhof. Ich fand es auch seltsam und konnte mich gleich für diesen kleinen, stillen, wunderschönen Friedhof begeistern. Das Blumenmeer sah unbeschreiblich im Tageslicht aus.

Normalerweise ist es ein zweitägiger Feiertag, beginnend am Abend vor dem 1. November kommen die Seelen der Kinder und bleiben bei der Familie und Freunden bis zum nächsten Tag. Die Seelen der Erwachsenen kommen am nächsten Abend und bleiben bis zum nächsten Tag – 2. November. (Sollte es auf einen Sonntag fallen, so bleiben die Seelen einen Tag länger, und verlassen die Familie erst am 3.11.)  Um sie willkommen zu heißen, bereiten die Familien zuhause Altäre/offrendas vor, geschmückt mit Schokolade, Totenbrot (Hefeteig – pan de muertos, Ringelblumen, Lieblingsspeisen und -getränke, Spielzeuge etc. um sie willkommen zu heißen und zu zeigen, dass man ihrer gedenkt. Familie und Freunde kommen zu Besuch und bringen weitere Gaben. Solche werden auch auf den Gräbern ausgelegt. Zuckertotenköpfe werden gemacht oder gekauft und sind mit dem Namen des Verstorbenen versehen.

Corazon Retablo

Once upon a time there was an Amazon mailing box which arrived at Bel’s house filled with inspirational books. One day Bel needed a cigar box to alter into a retablo/shrine for Rebecca Brook’s Cigar Box Shrine Silent Auction for the benefit of Oaxaca Street Children. While Bel unsuccessfully tried to obtain an empty cigar box in her neighborhood, one day she overheard the Amazon mailing box whispering to her: ALTER ME! ALTER ME! What a wonderful idea Bel thought. ***

Es war einmal eine Amazon-Verpackung, die gefüllt mit inspirierenden Büchern in Bel’s Wohnung eintraf. Eines Tages benötigte Bel eine Zigarrenschachtel, um diese in einen Retablo/Schrein für Rebecca Brook’s Zigarrenboxschrein Stille Auktion zum Nutzen für Oaxaca Straßenkinder. Während Bel ohne Erfolg versuchte eine leere Schachtel in der Nähe zu finden, hörte sie eines Tages diese Amazonschachtel in ihr Ohr flüstern: ALTER ME! ALTER ME! Was für eine tolle Idee dachte Bel.

Following Rebecca’s size indications (6 1/2 x 9 inches), she took a strong pair of scissors and with a snip here and snip there cut up 5 pieces. *** Rebecca’s Größenangaben folgend (ca. 17 x 24 cm), nahm sie eine gute Schere zur Hand und schnipp-schnapp hier und da schnitt sie 5 Teile zu.

After gathering old paper and tape, Bel started creating her own cigar box and added spikes to the sides. Why not also create a heart to place into the box Bel thought. There were plenty of scraps left to recycle. So she shaped a heart and added a little nicho. Tearing up scraps from brown kraft paper was quite entertaining and Bel glued the scraps onto the box and the heart using wallpaper paste turning it into a papier-maché retablo. One of Bel’s favorite and vital tools is the heat gun which helps shortening any drying time tremendously. A layer of white acrylic paint then was painted onto the box and the heart to provide the perfect basis for adding further colorful paint.

Nachdem Bel altes Papier und Tesaband sammelte, stelle sie selbst eine Zigarrenbox her, mit Zacken an den Seiten. Warum nicht auch noch ein Herz für die Mitte machen dachte Bel. Genügend Papier zum Recyclen war noch da. So formte sie ein Herz und fügte eine Niche hinzu. Schnipsel aus braunem Papier zuzerreisen machte Spass und Bel klebte diese auf die Schachtel mit Tapetenkleister und so wurde es ein Papiermaché-Retablo. Eins von Bel’s Lieblingsutensilien ist die Heißluftpistole, die jede Trockenzeit immens verkürzt. Anschließend wurde eine Schicht weißer Acryl aufgetragen, der die ideale Grundlagen für bunte Farben ist.

Paintbrushes, full with teal, red, black and yellow acrylic paint danced over the surface of the papier-maché objects. Bel knew immediately that she wanted to put the skull of a little girl into the heart nicho, representing the Oaxaca street children. Delicate papier-maché paste was shaped to form the head. Once air-dried, paint was added and a bow placed upon the head. Mexican paper flowers (ARTchix Studio) added the perfect embellishing touch. *** Pinsel, voll mit Acrylfarbe in Grün-Blau, Rot, Schwarz und Gelb tanzten über die Oberfläche des Schreins. Bel wußte gleich, dass sie einen Totenkopf eines kleinen Mädchens in die Herzniche setzen wollte, stellvertretend für die Oaxaca Straßenkinder. Der Kopf wurde aus feinster Papiermachémasse geformt. Nach Trockenzeit wurde er angemalt und eine Schleife  aufeklebt.  Mexikanische Papierblumen (ARTchix Studio) gaben den perfekten Dekotouch.

Bel’s Alebrije bird from Oaxaca (here) inspired her to paint on swirls and pattern using the fabulous Sharpie painters (bought @Teesha Moore) to give it a more real ”Mexican look”. (To be honest, the first layer of paint and pattern on the shrine and heart were different, but Bel repainted it with white.) A layer of varnish sealed the retablo. *** Bel’s Alebrije Vogel aus Oaxaca (hier) inspirierte Sie Swirls und andere Muster mit den genialen Sharpie painters (gekauft @Teesha Moore) anzumalen, um einen richtigeren  “mexikanischen Look” zu geben. (Ehrlichgesagt waren die ersten bunten Farben und Muster auf dem Schrein und Herz anders, doch Bel hat alles wieder mit weiß übermalt.) Zum Abschluß wurde der Retablo mit Lack fixiert.

WS: Fave altered object

This week Hermine wants to know what our fave object to alter is. Altered Books would be my fave. Thought I’d do another fave object though – a matchox! Love these thingies and you can do so much with them! Will be heading to Oaxaca/Mexico in a few days to attend the annual Michael deMeng de los Muertos workshop which I’ve been fancying for the past 3 years. Thought I’d make a little Frida pocket shrine to take along, put up in my hotel room and maybe even on my workshop table. We’ll be making retablos/shrines ourselves, but some mini inspiration won’t hurt, will it? Stampers Anonymous has this cool stamp “Caution: Artist at play” which I stamped on both sides as well. The Mexican paper flowers are from ARTchix Studio and I just dig them! Viva Mexico, I’m coming again this year.

Diese Woche möchte Hermine wissen, was wir am liebsten verändern. Am liebsten mag ich  Altered Books. Wollte aber ein anderes Objekt der Begierde verändern – eine Streichholzschachtel.  Mag diese kleinen Dinger total gerne, sind so vielseitig! In ein paar Tagen düs ich ab nach Oaxaca/Mexiko um am jährlichen Michael deMeng de los Muertos Workshop teilzunehmen, mit dem ich schon seit gut 3 Jahre liebäugele. Dachte, ich mach mir einen kleinen Frida-Taschenschrein zum Mitnehmen, Aufstellen im Hotelzimmer oder vielleicht sogar auf meinem Workshoptisch. Wir werden selbst Retablos/Schreine machen, aber etwas Miniinspiration schadet doch nicht, oder? Stampers Anon hat diesen coolen Stempel “Caution: Artist at play” , den ich auch auf die Seiten gestempelt habe. Die mexikanischen Papierblumen sind von ARTchix Studio  und ich mag sie total gerne!Viva Mexiko, komme nochmal dieses Jahr.

Peaceful Frida made for the new WS “Peace“ challenge. September 21 is the UN International Day of Peace. And to make it even more special, the PEACE symbol is celebrating it’s 50th birthday this year (2008). Thanks Johanna for making us all remember this! *** Peaceful Frida gemacht für die neue MS-”Frieden“-Herausforderung. Der 21. September 21 ist der UNO-Weltfriedenstag. Dem wird noch eins obendrauf gesetzt, das dieses Jahr (2008) auch der 50. Geburtstag des Friedens-Symbol ist. Danke Johanna, dass Du uns alle daran erinnet hast!

And while I’m at one of my favorite subjects – Frida Kahlo. You know well how much I enjoy playing with her images.  Love commercial buttons you can buy everywhere and had some fun ones already (keep loosing them though), but those ARTchix Studio buttons are even better. Inspired by the amazing Helga I had my own buttons made! Would have never thought of it, thanks Helga!! My Frida buttons are my favorite, so easy to attach my artwork now to more art. You’ll recognize several images from previous posts. Helga created this fantastic VIVA FRIDA faux postage sheet (below) available HERE. Wowza! Also been having fun drawing some sugar skulls for a Day of the Dead sheet, and cut up some flourishes. Images from the Mexican master wood carver Jose Guadelupe Posada had to be included!! And last weekend I bought the Posada-stamp plate from Stamp Camp at Stempelmekka – small images, but so cool!

Und wenn ich schon bei einem meiner Lieblingsthemen bin – Frida Kahlo. Wie Du weißt, spiele ich sehr gerne mit ihren Bildern. Mag gerne Kommerz-Buttons, die es überall zu kaufen gibt und hab immer wieder welche (verliere sie immer wieder). Doch diese ARTchix Studio buttons sind noch viel besser. Inspiriert von Helga’s tollen Buttons hab ich mir auch meine eigenen machen lassen! Auf die Idee wäre ich nie gekommen, tausend Dank. Meine Frida-Buttons gefallen mir am besten (oben), so einfach nun meine Kreationen Selbstgemachtem anzustecken. Helga hat einen tollen (wenn ich das sagen darf) VIVA FRIDA “faux postage”-Bogen (HIER) mit altered Frida-Motiven von mir gemacht. Einige gab’s hier auf dem Blog schon zu sehen.  Hab auch einige Sugar Skulls gemalt für einen Day of the Dead-Bogen. Wollte unbeding auch Motive vom mexikanischen Meisterschnitzer Jose Guadelupe Posada mit drauftun. Hab mir übrigens letztes Wochenende auf dem Stempelmekka die Posada-Gummis von StampCamp gekauft -klein die Motive, aber fein!!
