Stripes are the new WS challenge. While stripes were easy, it took me a while to figure out how to incorporate a stamp into the tag. 2 reasons why I stamped dream onto the transparency: 1 - didn’t want to goof up the fabric and 2 - wanted to make sure that the word was a crisp black. Changed the flowers and then also added fab white iridiscent wings from  ARTchix Studio. Oops, forgot to mention that the image is a stencil cut in February (while I was at it) and was sprayed onto a striped paper napkin!

Streifen sind die neue MS-Herausforderung. Während Streifen leicht waren, hab ich eine Weile gebraucht herauszufinden, wie ich was Gestempeltes auf dem Tag unterbringe. 2 Gründe, warum ich Dream auf Transparentfolie gestempelt habe: 1 - wollte den Stoff nicht vermasseln und  2 - wollte sicher gehen,  dass das Wort schön schwarz ist. Hab dann andere Blumen genommen und noch ein paar tolle weiße Flügelchen von  ARTchix Studio aufgeklebt. Oops, hab vergessen zu erwähnen, dass die Frau eine selbstgeschnittene Schablone (als ich im Februar mal die Muse dazu hatte) ist und auf eine gestreifte Papierserviette aufgesprüht wurde.

Would you believe that I already have a spray paint station (photo below)? Thought I’d use a tv box while I’m having fun with it. I can see why sprayers have so much fun! It can be quick (once you know what you are doing and know how to deal with the tools) and absolutely fun. Made this envelope for a pal. She owns this hotel, so I can post her address Need to buy some alpha stencils for sure!! Are you getting tired of seeing my self-portrait stencil? I think it’s way cool on envelopes and I had to make a sign-in tag the other night for a fabric book. If you’re quick, you can make monoprints of the side up of the sprayed stencil. The cool floral plastic stencil I bought from Stewart Gill. Thank you Michelle, Tina and Gillian for inspiring and the final pushes!

Ob Du es glaubst oder nicht, aber ich habe bereits eine Sprühstation (Foto oben). Dachte, ich verwende einen TV-Karton und so macht es echt Spass. Kann besser verstehen, warum Sprayer sich amüsieren! Es geht schnell (wenn Du einmal weißt, wie es geht und das Zubehör hast) und macht Spass. Hab dieses Umschlag für eine Stempelfreundin gemacht. Muss aber noch ein paar Alpha-Schablonen kaufen. Schon die Nase voll von meinerm Selbstporträt-Schablone? Finde, dass sie total passend für Umschläge/Mail Art ist und hab gleich ein Sign-in Tag für die Stoffbuchrunde damit verziert. Wenn Du schnell bist, kannst Du sogar noch Monoprints mit der besprühten Schablone machen. Die coole Blumenschablone ist von  Stewart Gill. Danke an Michelle, Tina  und Gillian für die Spray-Inspiration und die Schubser!

Had lunch the other day with Laury and she treated me with this fabulous needle holder book (don’t know what you really call them!). How lucky am I? I hoard needles, so this is the perfect home for them and they won’t fall into my fabric tool box. Thank you sooo much!! *** Hatte letzt Lunch mit  Laury und sie überraschte mich mit diesem tollen Nadelmäppchen. Womit hab ich das verdient? Da ich Nadeln sammle, ist es das perfekte Zuhause für meine Nadelsammlung. Somit fallen sie nicht mehr in meine Nähtäschchen. Tausend Dank!

Alebrijes are everywhere in Mexcio, you just cannot miss them. These colorful painted creatures are made of wood (with sometimes detachable pieces like wings, flowers, feathers etc.) or papiermaché and originate from Oaxaca. Wooden alebrijes were made popular by Manuel Jiménez, a master wood carver from Oaxaca. Got Happy Fish a new friend, couldn’t resist this green wooden bird. Wings are detachable and I love his feet!

Couldn’t resist these cuties above, they measure about 2,5 inches. *** Diese süßen oben sind ca. 7 cm hoch und ich fand sie einfach unwiderstehlich!

*** Huichol Art ***

Huichol is a native Indian tribe which lives up today in the Sierra Madre, in the western part of Mexico, close to Puerto Vallarta. “Apart from several previous records the existence of the Huichol had been perceived consciously by the modern world only during the last 50 years. This is very important, because it makes that tribe the last, nearly authentic native indian tribe directly connected to the Azteca history, maintaining the same ageless rituals and beliefs. They are considered by many anthropologists to be an invaluable window to the past.” Contemporary Huichol Art can be seen and found everywhere. “To preserve their ancient beliefs they have begun making detailed and elaborate yarn paintings, a development and modernization of the nieli’ka.” Yarn paintings are created by layering beeswax and pine resin onto wood or clay and then pressing fibers into the “glue”. I couldn’t resist the above mask which was the only artwork I found combining beads and fibre (here glued onto pottery).

Huichol Bead art (also called Chaquira) is relatively new. Beads are pressed into a wax-resin mixture (serving as glue) using such prepared beaded needles as shown above. I asked and finishing the beaded sun will take him about 2 days. The patterns and motives used are derived from their rich ceremonial traditions and shamanic rituals. *** Huichol’s Perlenkunst (auch Chaquira genannt) ist recht jung. Hier werden Perlen mit solch vorbereiteten Nadeln in ein Wachs-Harz-Gemisch gedrückt, das als Klebstoff fungiert. Hab nachgefragt und es dauert ca. 2 Tage, eine solche Sonne fertigzustellen. Die verwendeten Muster und Motive stammen von den reichhaltigen Traditionen und Schamanenritualen ab.

Saw these gorgeous contemporary retablos/shrined mirrors in a gallery. I couldn’t resist the above gorgeous Day of the Dead retablo. The artists creates his figures with plaster and mashed potatoes. Enjoy your meal! Box is made of wood. Quite special!

Wunderschöne Retablos und Spiegel in einer Gallerie gesehen. Obiger Day of the Dead retablos hab ich mir gegönnt. Der Künstler gestaltet seine Figuren aus Gips und Kartoffelpüree. Guten Appetit! Box ist aus Holz. Was besonderes!

Couldn’t pass up on these 2 papiermaché muerto heads from Oaxaca. While there are mass produced clay muertos, I saw some unique and delightful ones in various galleries and shops, here are a few. And look what’s dancing in my car now…

Muertos … konnte an diesen beiden Papiermaché-Köpfen nicht vorbei. Während es viele Ton-Muertos in Massenproduktion gibt, hab ich in Gallerien und Läden herrliche Einzelexemplare gesehen, hier ein paar. Und schau mal, was nun in meinem Auto umhertanzt…

Loved the contrast of the indians and the Mexican Goths at Jardin Hidalgo, spotted just down the road from the Frida Kahlo Museum. *** Klasse Kontrast zwischen den Indianern und den mexikanischen Goths. Gesehen im Jardin Hidalgo (Hidalgo-Garten), etwas die Straße runter vom Frida Kahlo Museum.

And last but not least, I love children books and found this one at the Frida Kahlo Museum: El Zopilote y la Chirimia (the buzzard and the flageolet ) by Gabriela Olmos and paintings by Valeria Gallo. My Spanish isn’t quite intermediate, so my kind of level. Other than that, the books illustrations are painted in the Huichol’s yarn painting style and it’s a wonderful story, worth the money.

Zuguterletzt noch ein Kinderbuch, dass ich im Frida Kahlo Museum entdeckt habe: El Zopilote y la Chimiria (Der Truthahngeier und das Flageolett) von Gabriela Olmos und Zeichnungen von Valeria Gallo. Mein Spanisch ist mal gerade mittelmäßig und solche Bücher sind prima zu verstehen. Abgesehen davon, hat dieses Buch wunderschöne Illustrationen im Stil der Huichol Garnbilder und und eine wunderschöne Geschichte ist, das Geld wert!

I know little to nothing about insects, but they are the new WS challenge and a bit of trivia is always fun. ALTER ME is the new WS challenge. 2 cabinet cards for this challenge can be downloaded HERE. An old trend, but why not add a fresh 2008 look to it. Never ever altered a real cabinet card, just been hoarding them. Below is a tutorial for creating an altered (faux) cabinet card with stamp sources. Only had time for one. Bought this black/transparent baroque wrapping paper in November and finally got to use it. Still in fabric heaven as you can see. Made this for a friend. *** ALTER ME (Ändere mich) ist die neue MS-Herausforderung. 2 Cabinet Cards fkönnen HIER. für diese Herausforderung heruntergeladen werden. Ein alter Trend, ‘ne olle Kamelle, aber wir können ihm ja einen frischen 2008 Look verpassen. Ich gebe zu, ich hab noch nie eine richtige Cabinet Card verändert, ich sammle sie nur. Unten ist eine Anleitung zum Herstellen einer Faux Cabinet Card mit Stempelangaben. Hatte nur Zeit für eins. Hab dieses schwarz-transparente Barockgeschenkpapier im November gekauft und wollte es endlich mal einsetzen. Bin immer noch im Stoffhimmel.

Altered Faux Cabinet Card

1. Download photos HERE and print out. If printed onto paper, glue onto cardstock and cut out.*** Fotos HIER herunterladen und ausdrucken. Falls auf Papier gedruckt wird, einfach auf Karton kleben und ausschneiden.

2. Lay tracing paper onto photos and trace out object to create a mask. Cut out mask. *** Lege Brotpapier auf Foto und zeichne Umrisse nach zum Herstellen einer Maske.

3. Paint background with 2 layers of Gesso and image with one thin layer of Gesso. *** Hintergrund mit 2 Lagen und Motif mit einer dünnen Lage Gesso übermalen.

4. Sketch various hair styles, select favorite and apply to image and mask. *** Zeichne verschiedene Haarstile, wähl eins aus und ändere das Foto und die Maske passend ab.

5. Place mask over image and paint background with pink and green acrylics. Stamp text (Stampin’Up!) with orange acrylics on top pink background. Stamp dots (Tim Holtz) with white acrylics onto lower green background. Paint hair with white acrylics. Cut out pieces from black-transparent wrapping paper and glue onto cabinet card.  *** Maske über Motiv leben und Hintergrund mit rosa und grünem Acryl bemalen. Text (Stampin’Up!) mit orgranem Acryl auf oberen pinken Hintergrund stempeln. Punkte (Tim Holtz) mit weißem Acryl auf unteren grünen Teil stempeln. Haare mit weißer Acrylfarbe ausmalen. Stücke von schwarz-transparentem Geschenkpapier aufkleben.

6. Paint hair with black permanent marker and paint earrings. Add dots with white gel pen. Paint on eyeshadow with blue acrylics and lipstick with red gel pen. Add soft blush to cheeks with red pencil.  *** Haar mit schwarzem Permanentstift aufmalen, ebenso Ohrringel. Mit weißem Gelstift Punkte aufmalen. Lidschatten mit blauem Acryl und Lippenstift mit rotem Gelstift aufmalen. Blusenkragen mit weißem Gelstift aufmalen. Mit rotem Bleistift leicht Rouge auf die Backen auftragen.

7. Create skirt from layers of fabric and tull (white, pink, green and black), pull together, stitch onto cabinet card and stitch on beads. Stamp booty legs (Zettiology) onto white cardstock, cut out and glue behind cabinet card. *** Rock aus mehreren Lagen Tüll (weiß, rosa, grün und schwarz) und 1Lage Stoff zusammenlegen und -raffen, auf Cabinet Card nähen und Perlen aufnähen. Gestiefelte Beine (Zettiology) auf weißen Karton stempeln, ausschneiden und hinter Cabinet Card kleben.

8. Glue skull (from fabric) onto blouse. *** Totenkopf (von Stoff) auf Bluse kleben.

8. Stamp “Punk” (See D’s) onto white cardstock, cut out and glue on black thread. Poke hole into hand using awl and attach thread as on picuture. *** “Punk” (See D’s) auf weißen Karton stempeln, ausschneiden und hinten Stück Stickseide aufkleben. Mit Aale Loch in Hand machen und Stickseide etwas durchdrücken.

9. Spray watercolor paper on both sides with Glimmer Mist, add water drips and let dry. Glue on piece of black-transparent wrapping paper. Glue cabinet card with double sided carpet tape onto background. Attach 2 eyelets to top. Create a hanger from wire, string on beads, wrap around chopstick, extend a bit and tie ends.*** Aquarellpapier beidseitig mit Glimmer Mist besprühen und Wasser auftropfen, verlaufen und trocknen lassen. Cabinet Card mit doppelseitigem Teppichklebeband aufkleben. 2 Eyelets anbringen. Aus Draht Hänger herstellen, Perlen aufziehen, um chin. Essstäbchen drehen, etwas aufziehen und Enden verknoten.

Arrows are the new WS challenge and it was a good opportunity to carve a new dotted arrow stamp and use it to print the other side of my fabric tote. Been wanting to do this. Used StazOn Cactus Green and the new Fuchsia Pink ink pads. This time I also used a self portrait stencil I already cut out in February, Gillian challenged us to make one on her art-e-zine’s stencil tutorial. (That’s why I like challenges, they make me do things I would never think of in my wildest dreams!) Since my initials are on the other side, it kind of fits. Perfect again for GPP 19 crusade - Cut it out. Gillian also has a good digital stencil tutorial HERE which helps you to turn your photo into a digital stamp using Photoshop. Since many thought the stamp on the other side was one big one, below are the carved stamps I used.

Pfeile sind die neue MS-Herausforderung und so war es eine günstige Gelegenheit, einen neuen gepunkteten Pfeilstempel zu schnitzen und damit die andere Seite meiner Stofftasche zu bedrucken. Wollte das sowieso machen. Benutzt hab ich StazOn Cactus Green und das neue Fuchsia Pink Stempelkissen. Dieses Mal hab ich eine Selbstportrait-Schablone zum Sprayen benutzt, die ich bereits im Februar ausgeschnitten habe, Gillian hat uns dazu auf ihrer art-e-zine-Seite aufgefordert. (Deshalb mag ich Herausforderungen, mach Dinge, die mir sonst im Traum nie einfallen würden.) Digitalstempel geht sehr einfach mit Photoshop, aber nicht mit jedem Foto. Da auf der anderen Seite meine Initialen sind, passt das doch prima. Passt wieder bestens zur GPP 19 crusade - Schneid es aus (2). Gillian hat auch  HIER eine prima Anleitung zum Herstellen einer Digitalschablone in Englisch, mit der Du Dein eigenes Foto in einen Digitalstempel umwandeln kannst. Brauchst dafür eine entsprechende Software, z.B. Photoshop. Da viele dachten, der Stempel auf der anderen Seite sei ein einziger gewesen, oben also auch meine verwendeten geschnitzten Stempel.

The Twilight Saga continues and book 2 - New Moon - was even better than Twilight (book 1). Michelle asked and the GPP crusaders wanted more stencils. So GPP 19 is Cut it out, part II. Made a bat wing, lips and bite me (text) as stencils. What was REALLY practical was to spray the large bat wing with spray paint, would have been soooo much longer with a paintbrush! Better remember that. The Lips stencil also sprayed well of course, but the Bite Me text I guess is too small, smeared all over. Maybe I sprayed too much paint? All too new. So I used the stencil with a white gel pen. Need a bookmark since I just started book 3 - Eclipse. And made a mail art envelope to send away soon. Hope the postal services won’t have problems with it, hmhm. It’s a fantasy, vampire romance for Teens, Twens and anyone who likes this genre. VERY SUSPENSEFUL, not very bloody, scarry, (the McCullen’s are “vegetarian vampires”!) and I giggle a lot. But my 10 year old niece would probably think differently. hehe Gravestones and dripping blood stamps from GPP. I better slow down since “Breaking Dawn” will only be released on August 4. Die Twilight Saga geht weiter und Buch 2 (in Deutsch sind die Titel so was von blöd übersetzt und auch die Cover schlecht) - Bis zur Mittagsstunde - war noch besser als Bis zum Morgengrauen (Buch 1/Twilight). Michelle fragte und die GPP Crusaders wollten mehr von Schablonen. Deshalb ist GPP 19 - Schneid es aus, Teil II. Hab einen Fledermausflügel, Lippen und Bite Me (Text) als Schablonen gemacht. Was VOLL praktisch war, war den Flügel mit Sprayfarbe aufzusprühen, bisher hab ich ja alles immer mit Farbe aufgepinsel! Werd ich mir merken. Die Lippen konnten auch bestens aufgesprüht werden, doch der Text ist wohl zu klein, denn der war total verschnmiert. Hab zum Glück 2 Lesezeichen angefangen. Vielleicht hab ich auch zu viel Farbe drauf gesprüht? Ist halt noch zu neu. Hab die Schablone also mit einem weißen Gelstift verwendet. Brauchte wirklich ein Lesezeichen, hab nun Buch 3 angefangen - Bis zum Abendrot (Eclipse). Und hab gleich einen Mail-Art-Umschlag gemacht zum baldigen Verschicken. Hoffe, dass die Postdienste da mitspielen, hmhm. Die Serie ist eine romantische fantasy und Vampirromanze für Teens, Twens und wem immer das gefällt. TOTAL SPANNEND, nicht blutig oder verängstigend (die McCullen’s sind “vegetarische Vampire”), ich kichere viel. Doch meine 10-jährige Nichte würde da wohl anders drüber denken. hehe Grabsteine und tropfende Blutstempel von GPP. Ich mach mal besser langsam, da “Breaking Dawn” (Buch 4) erst am August in Englisch veröffentlicht wird. Danke für die Anregung Michelle! How fascinating! On Tuesday America’s oldest necklace was found in Peru, near Lake Titicaca and it’s over 4.000 years old. It’s made of 9 golden tubes and 11 turquoise beads. BBC writes: “The discovery suggests that the use of gold jewellery to signify status began before the appearance of more complex societies in the Andes”. More about it here. The gold tubes seem to be made from gold nuggets, hammered flat and then shaped the tube, see the cold connection below. It seems to run in our genes, doesn’t it? Amazing anthropology!

Wie faszinierend! Am Dienstag wurde Amerika’s älteste Kette in Peru, nahe des Titikakasees, gefunden und sie ist über 4.000 Jahre alt. Die Kette wurde rekonstruiert aus den gefundenen 9 Goldhülsen und 11 Türkisperlen. Vermutlich wurden die Goldhülsen aus Goldnuggets hergestellt, flachgehämmert und dann geformt (s. Foto unten). Bei Wissenschaft.de kann man hier darüber nachlesen. BBC schreibt: “Die Entdeckung läßt vermuten, dass die Verwendung von Goldschmuck als Statussymbol bereits vor dem Erscheinen von komplexeren Gesellschaften in den Anden begann”. Scheint wohl in unseren Genen zu liegen, oder? Irre Anthropologie!
